Successful, efficient completion of any procedure is much more likely if time is taken beforehand to optimize patient positioning and equipment set-up. This section explains these important steps. |
|
|
For most procedures, positioning the patient correctly is crucial to the success of the procedure. Positioning requires attention to a number of factors, including patient comfort, physician comfort, patient safety, privacy, illumination, and exposure of the relevant anatomy. |

The Room | The Equipment
The setup for the procedure will vary depending on the type and urgency of procedure, but a number of simple steps apply to any setup.
|
Prior to beginning, ensure that the room or physical space where the procedure will be performed will meet the requirements of the procedure:
- Suction?
- Moveable
light source?
- Oxygen?
- Cardiopulmonary monitor?
- Resuscitation equipment?
- Sharps disposal?
- Room to maneuver?
- Adequate privacy?

Once you have chosen and prepared a room , develop a checklist of equipment that will be needed for the procedure. For example, a checklist for lumbar puncture would include:
|
- Mayo stand
- Povidone Iodine solution
- Extra gauze
- Lumbar puncture kit
- Extra spinal needle
- 2% lidocaine, 5 cc syringe, and #27 or #30 needle
Finally, anticipate any extra supplies you might need for the procedure, such as extra anesthetic, needles, sutures, syringes, or gauze. Open all sterile items onto the sterile field before donning sterile gloves. This will increase your efficiency and speed because you won’t have to call for help during the procedure.
