SPC is contraindicated when the bladder is non-palpable and demonstrated to be small by ultrasound.
Furthermore, scars from lower abdominal wall surgery represent a serious but relative contraindication to the procedure, as does a history of bladder surgery.
Lastly, because SPC is invasive, a patient who is over-anticoagulated is not a good candidate for this procedure. In cases of prior abdominal surgery, bladder surgery or over-anticoagulation, a small gauge catheter may be placed suprapubically for urgent urinary drainage until a urologist can assist in more definitive treatment.
